Sanshō (sumo)

Sansho (Japanese三 赏, " three rates " ) are the special prizes that can be awarded to wrestlers Makuuchi Division as part of a sumo tournament, provided that in the tournament more victories than defeats reach ( kachikoshi ). Yokozuna and ozeki are excluded from the award.

There are three different awards, all of which are endowed with a cash prize of 2 million yen:

  • GINO shō (技能 赏) award for best technology
  • Shukun - shō (殊 勲 赏) Award for outstanding performance
  • Kantō shō (敢 闘 赏) prize for the best fighting spirit

These prizes will be awarded by a jury of experts and journalists since November 1947, although not necessarily in every tournament every price and also not necessarily any prize will be awarded only once per tournament. In addition, a wrestler will also get more of the awards.

Only five times in the history of the sport succeeded wrestlers, all three prizes in a single tournament to unite at: Daiju Hisateru in July 1973, Ōnishiki Ittetsu in September 1973 Takahanada Koji in January 1992, Dejima Takeharu in July 1999 and Kotomitsuki Keiji in November 2000.

Overall was awarded most Akinoshima Katsumi, the nineteen times received one of Sansho.
