Sanzan period

The time - Yong Jiang (Japanese三 山 时代, Yong Jiang - jidai, dt " time of three mountains ") is a historical time period on the Ryukyu Islands, in which the first kingdoms were established on the main island of Okinawa. It is now dated to the period from about 1314 to 1429.

Since the beginning of the 13th century individual tribal leaders on Okinawa began to expand their power and consolidate by building extensive fortifications, the so-called Gusuku. At the beginning of the 14th century formed from the individual chiefdoms as three main kingdoms on the island: Hokuzan (北山, " Northern Mountain" ) in the north, Chūzan (中山, " Central Mountain " ) in the center and Nanzan (南山, "Southern mountain ") in the south. From the names of these three kingdoms, the name of the time deduced as a period of three mountains. The three kingdoms existed for about 100 years before the ruler of Chūzan, Shō Hashi, 1416 and 1429 first Hokuzan finally Nanzan conquered and declared himself the first king of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.
