Castelo de São Jorge (2004)

The Castelo de São Jorge is a fortress with integrated castle ruins in Lisbon and is one of the many attractions of the city.

The castle was built by the Moors, they lost the Conqueror in 1147 to Alfonso. It was then used for centuries as a royal castle. In a tower of the castle, the Torre do Tombo, there was the royal collection of documents. 1755, the castle in the earthquake of Lisbon was destroyed.

The site extends to approximately 6,000 m². The complex includes several towers, sentries, a moat, ruins from Phoenician, Roman and Moorish times and two large spaces that invite you to linger, bowling or domino games.

The observation deck of the fortress allows a wide view of the entire city and the Tagus River. Of historical interest and worth seeing is the so-called ogival house with five pointed arches. To see include a carved, decorated with arabesques door from the 17th century. In addition, earlier here, a prison was housed.

1943 turned the former UFA - actor Artur Duarte with O Costa do Castelo, a successful and geographically in the Castle district comedy.
