Saules

Saules is a municipality in the administrative district in the canton of Bern Bernese Jura in Switzerland.

Geography

Saules is on 743 m above sea level. M., 13 km west-southwest of the town Moutier ( straight line ) and 12 km north of Biel / Bienne. The farming village extends into the Talniederung the creek Trame, a left tributary of the Birs, west of the Jura latitudinal Vallée de Tavannes.

The area of ​​4.3 km ² large municipality area includes a small part of the valley basin Vallée de Tavannes, this is up to 4 km wide. M. ) on the crest of Moron chain as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Saules are Reconvilier, Saicourt, Sornetan, Souboz and Loveresse.

Population

With 157 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Saules is one of the small communities of the Bernese Jura. Of the 91.5 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 7.9 % and 0.6 % speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Saules amounted in 1850 to 143 residents in 1900 to 212 inhabitants. Especially after 1960 (202 inhabitants), a sharp decrease, which was however stopped in recent years.

Economy

Saules is still mainly dominantly agricultural village, where dairy farming and cattle breeding as well as some orchards predominate in your location. In recent decades the village has also developed the residential community. Outside the primary sector, there is little jobs in Saules. Many workers are therefore commuters and work in the industrial towns of the Vallée de Tavannes.

Traffic

The community is conveniently comparatively relatively easy to reach. It lies on the road from Reconvilier to Le Fuet. Saules is connected through the bus line that runs from Tavannes via Lajoux to Les Genevez to the network of public transport.

History

The first written mention of Saules dated to the year 1148, when Pope Eugene III. the monastery of Moutier- Grandval land confirmed in Sales. Also the monastery Bellelay and the Prince-Bishopric of Basel had the right to collect tithes in Saules. From 1797 to 1815 Saules belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont- Terrible, which was connected to the 1800 Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern to the district of Moutier.

Attractions

In the center are some typical farmhouses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, the building of the former school and an old village wells are obtained. Saules does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Reconvilier Chaindon.
