Saunders Island, South Sandwich Islands

Saunders Iceland is the second largest of the located in the South Atlantic South Sandwich Islands.

Geography

The politically to the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands counting, uninhabited and crescent-shaped volcanic island (diameter about 8.8 miles) south of the Candlemasinseln and north of Montagu Iceland. Saunders Iceland is formed from the active stratovolcano Mount Michael, whose last explosive eruption was registered in 1819.

History

Saunders Iceland was discovered in 1775 by the English navigator James Cook and named after the British Admiral Charles Saunders ( 1715-1775 ). Was rediscovered the island until years later during an Antarctic expedition by the Baltic German navigator in Russian service Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.
