Saxen is a market town in Upper Austria in Perg district in Upper Austria with 1733 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

The municipality counts since 2003 to the Judicial District Perg ( previously the former district court Grein ), and the competent district court in Perg

In Saxen is the only Swedish author August Strindberg is museum dedicated outside Sweden.

Geography

Saxen is at 242 m above sea level. A. in the eastern Machland on the Danube. The expansion is 5.9 kilometers from north to south, from west to east 6.4 km. The total area is 18.9 km ². 23.8 % of the area is forested, 57.7 % of the area is used for agriculture.

History

Originally in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria lying, was the place since the 12th century the Duchy of Austria. Since 1490 he is the Principality ' Austria above the Enns ' attributed. During the Napoleonic Wars, the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918, the town belongs to the province of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the town belonged to the " Upper Danube ". After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria.

Culture, nature and sights

  • Strindberg Museum: The museum is dedicated to the Swedish writer August Strindberg (1849-1912); is shown as a documentation of the works, which were created in the period from 1893-1896, in Saxony, while the author stayed several times in Saxen and brackets. The Strindbergmusum in Saxony is the only museum outside of Sweden, which is dedicated to the world-famous author.
  • Nature information center: powered by Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union Regional Group Machland North Information Centre, which provides information on the fauna and flora of the Mach country.
  • Cultural tower mill is a privately held, existing since 2012 Mill Museum with theme park in Saxony on Klambach south of the output of Klamschlucht where a sleeping loft, a literary cabinet as well as a guest and tourist accommodation are housed. From the ground up renovated mill was first mentioned in the 16th century, until in the last decades of the 20th century in operation and is still functional.

Population Development

In 1990, the municipality had 1606 inhabitants according to the census, in 2000 then 1783 inhabitants. Due to the flood in August 2002 and the subsequent Aussiedelungen, the population number was reduced to 1700 to rise steadily again in the following years. In 2010 the village had 1731 inhabitants.
