Sayansk

Sajansk (Russian Саянск ) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast (Russia, Middle South Siberia ) with 40,800 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the plain north of Sayan, about 270 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Irkutsk, on the Oka River, a left tributary of the Angara. It is the Oblast subordinated administratively directly.

Sajansk is connected by a branch line ( freight only ) with just 20 km away and Sima station on the Trans -Siberian Railway. Southeast of the city also leads to the highway M53 Novosibirsk - Irkutsk - Listvyanka at the place over.

The same Sajanski pass, however in Sayan, 800 km away.

History

Sajansk was created in 1970 in connection with the construction of a chemical plant. It was the chemical plant south of the river Oka, between the present and the city Sajansk Sima, built the city itself ten kilometers from the factory set amid the taiga right of the river bank. With the completion of the work the place grew rapidly in 1975 received the status of an urban-type settlement and 1985 city law. The name refers to the location in the foothills of the Sayan Mountains.

Culture and sights

In Sajansk Sajansker the gallery is stored, a large collection especially Soviet art. In a landmark building is the Russian Orthodox Church, which is made entirely of wood outside in the upper part is mostly well inside.

Economy

City -forming enterprises is the chemical plant of Sajanskchimprom -AG. It is one of the largest in Russia and manufactures based on a nearby rock salt deposit caustic soda, liquid chlorine, polyvinyl chloride and various household chemicals.

There are also companies in the construction industry and food industry.
