Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve

The Schaalsee lies in the west of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ( districts of North West Mecklenburg and Ludwigslust - Parchim ) on the border of Schleswig -Holstein. From 1952 to 1990 large parts of the landscape Schaalsee were in a restricted zone of the inner German border. The state-imposed forced retirement coined in the period, the area and the nature became more spacious, so worth protecting this area has been designated as a biosphere reserve in 2000. On the Schleswig-Holstein side of the border is followed immediately by the Natural Park established in 1961, Lauenburg Lakes.

Geography

The biosphere reserve is located in a world characterized by the Weichseleiszeit young moraine landscape, which at the openwork of the Baltic Travelodge back of Schleswig -Holstein hill country east adjoins and runs through the whole of Mecklenburg. In the lake there are several islands, including Kampenwerder that Stintenburg island and Rethwiese.

Information facilities

The Pahlhuus in Zarrentin am Schaalsee is the information center of the biosphere reserve Schaalsee and also the headquarters of the Office of the Schaalsee. The contact of the Association Biosphere Schaalsee eV are in the office in Pahlhuus.

On 150 m² the Pahlhuus offers a modern exhibition on the reserve at Schaalsee and a multimedia information system. In the multi -media show " Timpe Te " one learns to know the region " fairytale kind." Outside there are, among others, a stone's adventure trail, the "green stage" and a solar pyramid. The Pahlhuus is a starting point scenic walks in the nature. The Moorlehrpfad - just beside the Pahlhuus - allows rare insight into a sensitive habitat.

The Grenzhuus in Schlagsdorf collects and preserves objects from everyday life on the inner German border. Behind the presentation in dioramas, films and exhibits is the desire to put limits into consciousness. (How did the inner German border affects people's lives? Characterize how limits at all the people? What would a life without natural way and dissemination boundaries? )

Zoning

Biosphere reserves are divided into zones, to meet the various tasks. The Schaalsee is divided into three zones: in the core zone ( 6.2 percent area fraction ) are unaffected by human areas, such as siltation zones of lakes, marshes and structurally rich deciduous forests. In the buffer zone ( 28.9 percent ) are obtained valuable ecosystems of the cultural landscape through careful land use. Together with the Zone 1 it has the highest ecological value. In the developing zone ( 64.9 percent ) is to be operated in an environmentally sound land use under the MAB program of UNESCO for a balanced regional development.

A total of 18 conservation areas are located within the biosphere reserve. They are mainly classified into the development and maintenance zone and occupy an area of 4483 hectares.

The communities Dechow, United Molzahn, Kneese, Roggendorfstraße, Rögnitz, Schlagsdorf and Utecht are quite the biosphere reserve. Proportionally the communities Carlow, Holdorf, King Field, Krembz, Thandorf, Wittendörp and Zarrentin contained on Schaalsee.
