Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser

Scheffau is a municipality with 1355 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Kufstein, Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Kufstein.

Geography

Scheffau is located at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve at 752 m altitude in Sölllandl. The municipality is 3,145 hectares, of which 1,680 ha are forest. Is the Hintersteinersee lake at about 883 m above sea level. There now is a public beach, which is open in summer. The town lives mainly from tourism. So the community has about 2,000 beds in all categories.

Scheffau is located about 12 km from the motorway exit Kufstein -Süd.

History

Scheffau was first mentioned in 1160 as " Seefenouwen ". However, smaller Rohssiedlungen of Bavarians have been back in the 9th century.

Until 1504 Scheffau belonged politically to the Duchy of Bavaria. Only after the end of the Bavarian Succession War, the municipality with the courts Kufstein, Kitzbühel and mountain rats was associated with Tyrol. Early 19th century The formation of a political community under Bavarian administration. 1865, the church was finally Scheffau independently.

Name and coat of arms

Scheffau literally translates as " the crooked Au ". In the Middle Ages, known as a wet meadow and Au later grassed area. The coat of arms granted in 1972 showing " In silver over green left Schrägfuß a schwarzgezungten goldendbewehrten black eagle head ". The left Schrägfuß in green symbolizes the gently sloping terrain, the crooked Au. The eagle refers to the zerklüfte Kaiser mountains, where they live again today. The colors green and gray are the colors of the flag Scheffaus.
