ScientificCommons

ScientificCommons is a platform to search for open scientific publications. About the search engine are more than 35 million publications from around 1,200 repositories and more than eight million authors (May 2010) from all scientific fields to find.

ScientificCommons recorded both metadata (according to the OAI standard; OAI: Open Archives Initiative ) and full texts. OAIster, the long established search engine for open access content, however, is a pure Harvester for metadata.

ScientificCommons.org developed and operated at the Institute for Media and Communications Management at the University of St. Gallen. The medium term goal is to build one of the biggest communication media of scientific results and products. This focuses in particular the creation of an efficient, distributed and scalable architecture in the foreground, which is to structure the access to knowledge and significantly simplify it.

One of the objectives of ScientificCommons include:

  • Localization of scientific articles
  • Identification of authors
  • Allocation of scientific publications to the respective authors
  • Semantic linking of scientific publications based on ontologies
  • Personalization options for those seeking information about new releases
  • Upload new publications directly ScientficCommons and assignment of the existing publications on the researchers own profile.
