Sciez

Sciez is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Sciez is located on 406 m above sea level. M., 9 km west-southwest of the town of Thonon -les- Bains ( straight line ). The village extends slightly increased in the plane of the Bas -Chablais on the south bank of Lake Geneva, west of the river Foron.

The area of ​​20.47 km ² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva, the lake shore line is approximately 3.5 km. The municipal area extends from the shallow lakeshore ( Golfe de Coudrée ) southward across the plain of the Bas -Chablais to the forest height of Mont de Boisy, on 730 m above sea level. Neighboring communities of Sciez are Margencel in the east, Perrignier, Lully, Bons- en- Chablais and Ballaison in the south and Massongy and Excenevex in the West.

History

The area around Sciez was inhabited very early. The oldest traces come from a riparian boundary settlement from the Neolithic period. Even during the Roman era there was a settlement here.

Around the year 520, the area passed through a donation by the Burgundian king Sigismund to the monastery of Saint- Maurice in the Valais canton of Switzerland. It is first mentioned in a document of 1026 Sciez Filly monastery that existed from the early 11th century to the 16th century. The origin of the place name is not clear. While some sources the Celtic word they see as the origin sy (border), lead researcher Sciez other names back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Sigius.

Since the Middle Ages Sciez belonged to the county and to the Duchy of Savoy. From 1536 to 1567 it was under the Berne rule. In the period 1798-1814 it belonged as part of the Département du Léman to France, then back to Savoy ( Kingdom of Sardinia - Piedmont) before it finally came to France in 1860.

Attractions

Among the sights of Sciez the neo-Gothic village church, the chapel Notre Dame de Chavannex are ( founded in the 13th century by monks of the monastery later destroyed Filly ) and to mention the Château de Coudrée. The latter was also in the 13th century and has several round towers and a massive square keep. In the center of Sciez remains of the medieval town walls have been preserved.

In the Bay of Coudrée there is an extended sandy beach, which is a popular day trip destination during the summer months. Sciez has a marina and is connected by passenger ship on Lake Geneva with the neighboring Seeanstößergemeinden. The village lies on the main road N5, which runs from Geneva to Thonon -les- Bains. Further road links exist with Bons- en- Chablais, Excenevex and Perrignier.
