Scipione Caffarelli Borghese ( born September 1, 1577 Artena, Italy, † October 2, 1633 in Rome) was a Roman Catholic Cardinal and Archbishop of Bologna from 1610 to 1612 and Kardinalgroßpönitentiar 1610-1633, 1605-1621 Kardinalnepot of Pope Paul V. ( the function by Cardinal Secretary of State ) and patron, librarian of Holy Roman Church 1609-1618, 1611-1633 cardinal protector of the German nation, bishop of Sabina 1629-1633.

Life

Scipione was born the son of Francisco Caffarelli and Ortensia Borghese in Rome. After the election of his uncle Camillo Borghese in 1605 to Pope Paul V, Scipione Caffarelli was adopted by the new Pope, which gave him the name Borghese, and appointed on July 18, 1605 cardinal. As Kardinalnepot and de facto head of government of the Vatican, he was a typical example of nepotism.

Scipione Borghese is the founder of the Villa Borghese and the Borghese Gallery collection of paintings in Rome, one of the most famous and most valuable private collections of paintings in the world that now is owned by the Italian State. Scipione was tirelessly worked as a builder and a generous patron of the arts. A series of sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini created on his behalf. Bernini created, among others, two marble busts of Cardinal, which today are located in the Galleria Borghese. Scipione died in 1633 and is buried in the Cappella Paolina in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
