Scott Shenker

Joseph Scott Shenker (born 24 January 1956 in Alexandria ( Virginia)) is an American computer scientist. He is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and is a senior scientist at the International Computer Science Institute there.

Shenker studied physics at Brown University with a bachelor's degree in 1978 and at the University of Chicago, where he received his doctorate in 1983 at Leo Kadanoff ( Scaling Behavior In A Map Of A Circle Onto Itself: Empirical Results ) As a post - graduate student, he was at Cornell University, and from 1984 at Xerox PARC. In 1998 he was one of the founders of the ATT Center for Internet Research

He focuses on Internet architecture, software - defined networks, infrastructure of data centers, large-scale distributed systems, game theory and economic theory. He belongs to the ISI Highly Cited.

Shenker is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, the IEEE and the National Academy of Engineering. In 2002 he was awarded the SIGCOMM Award and the 2006 IEEE Internet Award.

He is the brother of physicist Stephen Shenker.
