Seckau is a market town with 1279 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Austria in Styria and part of the district court or the district Mur Jews castle. It is considered a tourist resort and is especially known for its Benedictine Abbey. Seckau is a former Styrian bishopric also one of the two namesakes of today's diocese Graz- Seckau.

Geography

The village lies at the southern foot of the Alps Seckauer in a tributary of the Mur valley.

The market town of Seckau divided into the cadastral Dürnberg, Neuhofen and Seckau.

History

Especially important is founded in 1140 as an Augustinian Canons Abbey Seckau, which was repopulated in 1883 by Benedictine and 1940-45 was in turn repealed. From 1940 to 1945, there was in the Abbey, a National Political Education Institute.

1218-1782 was Seckau episcopal see of the Diocese of Graz- Seckau. 1886 collapsed the North Tower of the Basilica, after both towers 1891-1893 under the Gründungsabt Ildephons Schober were rebuilt. Furthermore, the complex includes the Abbey School Seckau, a private Catholic school.

1660 was the place Seckau market rights. The municipality Seckau was built in 1849 /50.
