Segezha

Segescha (Russian Сегежа, Karelian Segeža ) is a city in the Republic of Karelia (Russia) with 29 631 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 270 km north of the capital of Republic of Petrozavodsk at the mouth of the eponymous river Segescha into the lake Wygosero, which is drained by opening into the White Sea Wyg. Segescha has a harbor on Wygosero, through which also the White Sea - Baltic Canal leads and was dammed in addition to the construction of the lake.

Segescha is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies on the Murmansk railway opened in 1917, a now to October Railway RZD belonging railway from St. Petersburg to Murmansk ( kilometer 671 ). Ten kilometers west of the city runs the highway M18 Saint Petersburg- Severomorsk.

History

A settlement on site of the present town is known since the 16th century. The place itself was created with the construction of the Murmansk railway in 1914, named after the river.

In the 1930s, after the completion of the White Sea - Baltic Canal, was a paper mill. In 1943, the city charter was granted.

In the city the POW camp consisted of 212 German prisoners of war of World War II.

In the vicinity of the town is the same Russian prison camp. Celebrity inmate was up to his early release in December 2013, the contractor and government critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Economy

City -forming enterprises is the Segeschaer Cellulose and Paper Combine. There are also wood processing and construction industries.
