Sekong Province

Sekong (also Xekong, Lao: ເຊ ກອງ - [ Sēkɔ̄ṅ ] ) is a province of Laos.

Geography

Sekong is situated in the southeast of the country. The neighboring provinces are (from south clockwise): Attapeu, Champasak and Salavan. In the east, Sekong borders the province of Quang Nam Vietnam.

Sekong is 7665 km ², the second smallest province, it has the lowest population ( about 85,000 estimated in the census in 2005, 95,000 in 2009 ) and also the least densely populated of all the provinces (11.1 inhabitants / km ²). This is due to the remote and rocky landscape.

Population

The population consists mainly of Lao Theung that are represented here with several ethnic groups. Malaria is very common in the province, the child mortality rate is the highest in the country.

History

Sekong was created in 1984, when the area was separated from the Province Salavan.
