Sekyere East District

The Sekyere East District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and there one of 21 regional districts. The Sekyere West District is bordered by the districts Sekyere West, Afigya Sekyere, Kwabre, Asante Akim North, Ejisu - Juaben and to the district Sene in the Brong- Ahafo Region and Afram Plains District in the Eastern Region. Chief Executive over the 4516 km ² large district with about 157 378 (2000) inhabitants Philip Basoa is located in the district capital Effiduase.

The district was formed in 1988 together with the district Sekyere West from the former district Sekyere.

Geography

In the southern part of the district, the landscape is characterized by semi- wet rainforest. The northern part, however, consists mostly of grass savannah. The soils are fertile and are well suited to agricultural use.

Economy

The dominant economic sector is agriculture. Crops are the traditional foods such as cassava, yam, maize, rice, sweet potato and plantains. Also, a variety of vegetables are grown. The conditions in the district are also suitable for cultivation of export goods such as pineapple, ginger and pepper.

Attractions

In Sekyere East District lies with the Bomfobiri wild animal reserve an important and internationally renowned national park, which is known for its variety of birds and butterflies. A spur of the Digya National Park extends into the district. Here live many mammals, and safaris are offered.

The Shrine of Bodwease dates back to the 18th century. When Kumawu Papa festival traditions of the Ashanti culture be maintained.

Constituencies

In the district of East Sekyere two constituencies were established. In the constituency Effiduase - Asokore won in the parliamentary elections in 2004, Grace Coleman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP ) the seat in the Ghanaian parliament. For the constituency Kumawu Yaw Baah was elected by the NPP.
