Selah R. Hobbie

Selah Reeve Hobbie ( born March 10, 1797 in Newburgh, New York, † March 26, 1854 in Washington DC) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1827 and 1829 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Selah Reeve Hobbie was born shortly before the end of the 18th century in Newburgh in Orange County and grew up there. He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Delhi. Between 1823 and 1827 he worked as a district attorney in Delaware County. He then served as a Brigade Major and Inspector in the militia of New York. Politically, he was one of the Jacksonian Group.

In the congressional elections of 1826 for the 20th Congress Hobbie was in the eleventh electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry Ashley on March 4, 1827. He retired after March 3, from 1829, from the Congress.

In 1829 he was appointed Assistant Postmaster General - a position which he held until his resignation because of poor health in 1851. On March 22, 1853 he was appointed First Assistant Postmaster General. He held the post until his death. On March 23, 1854, he died in Washington, D.C. and was buried in the Congressional Cemetery.
