Șelimbăr

Şelimbăr ( German Schellenberg, Hungarian Sellenberk ) is a village in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical Location

The community is located just outside of Sibiu ( Hermannstadt) in the southeast of the urban area on Cibin ( Zibin ). The cadastral Mohu the Hârtibaciu ( Harbach ) opens into the Zibin.

The site includes three more Katastralgemeinden, resulting in a total of a long-drawn appearance.

History

The village was founded by the Saxons in 1323 was first mentioned.

For many centuries, were the Saxons, the majority of the population. From about the 18th century, Romanians began to settle. In the 1960s, there were about equal numbers of Saxony as Romanians in the village.

During the socialist period, but especially after the political changes of 1989 in Romania migrated the majority of the German population in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The " Battle of Schellenberg "

Achieved historic importance of the site by the Battle of Schellenberg, when Michael the Brave ( Michael the Brave ) was able to achieve a victory against Andrei Bathory as an ally of the Habsburgs on October 18, 1599.

Following this, Michael the Brave Transylvania could unite Wallachia and Moldavia temporarily. These events is attributed particular importance of much of the Romanian historians.

Presence

The site is today the expansion of the district capital, marked the Sibiu " FreibergSouth ". Shopping centers and supermarkets lining the main road west of the town center.

Traffic

The town is located on the busy main road ( "DN ") No. 1, immediately after the Sibiu city southbound exit. On a motorway (A1 ) on the discharge of the national highway is being built.

There are also in the village a railway station of the CFR at the track Sibiu Avrig. Formerly led the narrow gauge railway whoosh through the village.
