The selkupische language ( formerly Ostyak Samoyed Samoyed or forest called ) is one of the Samoyed languages. These form the Uralic language family, together with the Finno -Ugric languages. Selkpuisch is the only surviving südsamojedische language. It is spoken by the people of Selkups in the region between the rivers Ob and Yenisei. The number of native speakers is given as 1,500 ( about half of the people selkupischen ). In everyday use, sits down but more and more by the Russian. Until the fourth class is still taught in some schools in North Selkup.

The word Selkup ( šöľqup ) originally means man in the north.

Before the Russian Revolution of 1917, there were few religious texts that were held within the framework of Christianity in selkupischer language. A selkupische written language was systematically developed until 1931. One first used the Latin alphabet. From 1940 and revised in 1986 we went on the Cyrillic alphabet. Important researchers Selkupischen were Matthias Alexander Castrén and Kai Donner.

Dialects

The Selkupische are three dialects:

  • Taz ( тазовский диалект ): Nordselkupisch. Builds on the written language on it. Taz has 25 vowels and 16 consonants. The name derives from the settlement areas on the River Tas ( Таз ). The dialect is spoken by about 90 % of the Selkups. Today it use up to 1,400 speakers of about 1,700 members of the People
  • Tym ( тымский диалект ): Mittelselkupisch. Named after the river Tym ( Тым ), a tributary of the Ob. Today about 150 speakers ( of 1700 members of the People)
  • Ket ( кетский диалект ): Südselkupisch. Named after the river Ket ( Кеть ), an influx of Ob. Today about 20 speakers (out of about 200 members of the People)
