Serres (Greek Σέρρες ( f pl), older even Serre Σέρραι; . Bulgarian Сяр / Sjar ) is a town and municipality ( Dimos Serron Δήμος Σερρών ) in the Greek region Central Macedonia. Serres was until 2010 also the capital of the Prefecture of Serres. With the administrative reform of 2010, five neighboring municipalities were amalgamated to Serres. The city of Serres, is the administrative seat of the municipality, came in 2011 to 58 287 inhabitants.

Location

Serres is the running from northwest to southeast plain of the river Strymonas approximately in the middle and the eastern boundary of the Foothills Kouskouras ( altitude 1623 m), Menikio ( altitude 1963 m) and Vrondous ( altitude 1849 m). Serres is an important economic center, especially for trade with the Balkan states.
