Features

The most striking features of predominantly diurnal moths are their mostly transparent wings, with usually only the wing veins and margins are scaly and its appearance which resembles Hymenoptera strong. This is because they have addition to the transparent wings a wasp or bee - like, usually yellow stripes coloring. This mimicry protects them from predators who think of the supposedly dangerous animals distance.

The caterpillars of the Clearwing are brightly colored and usually have a dark head and remember in their appearance on beetle larvae. They live and drill in the branches, stems or roots of plants. They often go through a long, multi-year larval stage, some species can cause damage to agriculture and forestry.

Dissemination

The Clearwing are located on all continents except Antarctica, most representatives of lies in the tropics. Of them, 1,406 species so far known, in the Palearctic 366 species occur ( Nearctic: 128 species, Neotropics: 270 species, Ethiopis: 257 species Orientalis: 431 species Australis: 15 species [ 2 and naturalized ] ). In Europe there are 110 species, some of them in several subspecies.
