Seymour Martin Lipset

Seymour Martin Lipset ( born March 18, 1922 in New York; † December 31, 2006 in Arlington, Virginia) was an American sociologist and political scientist.

Seymour Martin Lipset in 1967 stand together with Stein Rokkan which is important for the party research Cleavage theory. He also coined the term extremism of the center. Lipset was a professor at Stanford University ( 1979-90 ), Harvard University and at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

His research focused on the political sociology, trade unions, public opinion, the Social Stratification and the Comparative Study of Democracy.

Lipset was a member of numerous scientific societies such as the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Education. As the only scientist was Lipset President of the American Political Science Association ( 1979-80 ) and the American Sociological Association ( 1992-93).
