Origin and History

The Chinese Shar- Pei is an ancient breed. Dogs of this type existed for centuries in the southern provinces of China, the South China Sea. The breed has its origin in Dialack, an area near Guangzhou (Canton), very common it was in the city Dah Let in Guangdong Province.

The race could be the basis of finds and to the Han Dynasty traced (206 BC -220 AD) and was maintained only by poor people since the beginning of its development. They were mostly fishermen and farmers. The Shar -Pei was then kept as a guard dog in the first place. Many dogs were also used for hunting small game and rats. Therefore, this breed also shows some hunting behavior.

The original Shar- Pei was almost extinct in the 1950s, he owed his salvation to the breeder Matgo Law of Hong Kong. According to this 1971 have just lived a dozen dogs. In an exhibition in Hong Kong "Chinese Shar- Pei " was a breed of Chinese dogs for the first time as a race and issued before 1972. In the early 1960s the foundation for today's Shar- Pei population by Matgo Law and Chung Ching Ming was created. The breeder Matgo Law from Hong Kong asked the early 1970s, the American dog lovers to help him in obtaining this breed. 1976 was the Shar- Pei as the rarest dog breed in the world. It only 145 copies were counted worldwide, of which lived in the United States alone 96. However, the Shar- Pei differ from that time much of which, as we know it today.

Today's Shar- Pei is bulky, has a larger head and is slightly smaller than the original type. The triangular ears, the blue tongue, hard hair and curled tail were preserved.

According to published in 2010, genetic analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms of 912 dogs and 225 gray wolves belong Shar Peis to the dogs, in which strong evidence of a subsequent mixing with gray wolves in their history were found. When Shar- Pei were (like the Dingo, the Chow Chow and Akita ) evidence of admixture with Chinese wolves found. At the same time Shar Peis belong to the dogs, which are genetically defined very much by most other investigated breeds and as ancient races ( the original "ancient breeds " ) are referred to. Within these dogs belong Shar Peis, together with the New Guinea Dingo, the Chow Chow, the Dingo and the Akita to the so-called Asian group.

Description

What is striking about this to 51 centimeters big dog are the many folds / flaps of skin on the head, withers and tail, and the very small, With the ears. Tongue, gums and palate are blue to blue- black. His hair is short, rough and bristly. The hair is straight and protrudes from the body, except white all solid colors are allowed. The tail is tightly curled or carried over back or to one of the two sides.

The puppies have more excess skin in contrast to puppies of other breeds. The wrinkles form 2 to 16 weeks and the dog grows in its fur inside. The folds should be tight-fitting and never overdone, so that an adult Shar- Pei should have only on the forehead and at the withers some wrinkles. Finally, the Shar- Pei was bred as a versatile working dog that is to be agile, and will not be hindered by excessive wrinkles.

Shar- Pei with fur type Brush Coat

The name " Shar- Pei " is erroneously translated as " wrinkle dog." " Wrinkle dog," translated into Chinese is called " zhòupì gǒu ". The correct translation for the name " shapi Gǒu " means " sand - skin - dog ".

The Chinese standard is described in a very picturesque way, the appearance of the Shar- Pei: ears like seashells, his nose like a butterfly, head big as a melon, big mother's face, the neck, such as the hippopotamus, the rump as the horse and the legs as the dragon.

Character

The Shar - Pei is a dog with a very individual character. It is peaceful and friendly under the condition that there are also the people to him. At home he feels in a circle all family members at ease. He loves his family, although he is a typical one-man dog. To strangers he is very cautious and reserved. His proud nature does not tolerate forced, training or dressage, although he willingly fits all commands. With patience, gentle but consistent training to reach him very much. Compared with other dogs he tends to dominant behaviors.

Care

The Shar -Pei needs no special care, it is because of his short hair easy to care for. The breed is eager to avoid today the excessive wrinkling in the adult dog. The obvious folds of the puppies disappear in the course of development and still remain only in the shoulder and head area. But pronounced wrinkles need to be followed.

Race Typical diseases

A breed type, probably genetically determined skin disease is idiopathic mucinosis. Furthermore, a great danger posed by Familial Shar- Pei Fever ( FSF) and Amyloidosis is currently lacking. The gene pool of the Shar- Pei is still very limited and needs on the part of the breeder of a great sense of responsibility, combined with care and by the breed associations and breed clubs a very precise control over which dogs may be bred.

When Shar- Pei reduced red blood cells ( microcytosis ) are physiological.
