SheevaPlug

The SheevaPlug is one of the first brought to the market "Plug Computers ". It was developed by the California-based company Global Scale Technologies. It has a 1.2 GHz Marvell Kirkwood 6281 ARM - compatible CPU (aka Feroceon ).

The SheevaPlug is delivered with pre-installed Ubuntu 9.04 ARM build. The SheevaPlug is from Linux kernel supports version 2.6.27 and is currently shipped with 2.6.30 - rc5. Marvell provides for the promotion of software development for this platform a software development kit available. This collection includes the GCC cross-compiler for ARM. The device has a FTDI FT2232 chip out to the mini USB port. This gives the developer access to both the connected to the JTAG bus JTAG port, including an RS-232 interface, is connected to the serial port of the Kirkwood processor and which can be accessed on the bootstrap and the kernel console. This debug console is accessible from any computer with support for the FTDI bus translator accessible ( including Linux, Mac OS X, Windows).

Since the first quarter of 2010, the SheevaPlug also is available in Germany.

From April 2010 Global Scale Technologies announces the availability of additional features ( including WiFi, HDMI) -equipped models of the Guru Plug.

  • Martin Michlmayr began developing a Debian port for the SheevaPlug.
  • Mark Gillespie published scripts to install Debian Lenny and Squeeze on either the internal NAND flash or SD card.
  • An ARM port of Fedora to be installed on the SheevaPlug exists.
  • Raúl Porcel managed to bring Gentoo on the plug to work, he published a tutorial for it.
  • Stuart Winter Slackware managed a functioning port. This is the official port of Slackware to the ARM.
  • The Inferno operating system boots on the SheevaPlug.
  • The SheevaPlug is also supported by FreeBSD 8.0 and 9 -CURRENT.
