Shibli Nomani

Allamah Shibli Numani (* 1857 in Azamgarh, India, † 1914) was an Islamic scholar and theologian.

He was the son of wealthy parents. His father was a successful lawyer and earned additionally used in the Indigo trade. That's why the son was also a good education are possible. Life

At the age of 19 years the orthodox Hanafi Muslim undertook the pilgrimage to Mecca. Shibli Numani was a strong proponent of Sharia, but at the same time also an opponent of the Wahhabi movement. A few years later Numani accepted a professorship at the Aligarh University. The founder of this university was Sayyid Ahmad Khan, who wanted to move the Muslims of India, to adopt Western culture and education to a greater extent. Therefore, English was also at the University of mainly spoken and formation mediated by Western standards. Curiously, Numani, although strictly brought up orthodox, Sayyid Ahmed Khan and strongly attracted to his reforms. Nevertheless, he tried to focus on the English language and culture at the University back to the Islamic culture and Arabic language directing it. He remained for many years as a professor at the university and moved only after Ahmed's death to the Ministry of Education in Hyderabad, where he took up a consultant post. From this item, he initiated many reforms for the Indian education system. In 1908 he became director of the Jami'a Nadwa al-' Ulum in Lucknow. After five years in this position its modern training methods but excited the anger of some conservative members of the Indian Ulama and he had to leave the university.

It took him back to his home town Azamgarh. Here Shibli Numani opened an Islamic Academy named Dar al - Musannifin, or house of the writer.

Until his death Shibli Numani now spent his time developing this academy, which soon became an important center of Islamic science and research, particularly in the field of literature and the history of the Indian subcontinent, become. Before his death in 1914, the Academy has been renamed in Shibli Academy.

Numani always tried Muslims to remember their culture and origin, thereby strengthening the Muslim society. He was a strong supporter of the idea of ​​a large pan-Islamic Ummah and an opponent of the British occupation, although he was still the British against behaved reasonably loyal.
