Shohimardon (also Shakhimardan; Russian Шахимардан Schachimardan; Persian شاه مردان, DMG SAH- e Mardan, king of men ') is a town in the Ferghana Valley. Shohimardon is an Uzbek enclave and completely surrounded by Kyrgyz territory. Today's enclave has an area of 90 km ² and a population of 5,100 people (as of 1993), of which 90 % Uzbeks and Kyrgyz are about 9 %.

Shohimardon is 55 km south of Fergana, where a paved road through the Kyrgyz Batken region ( district Kadamschai ) to Shohimardon leads. Surrounded by mountains Shohimardon is located at 1500 meters above sea level and is considered the " Switzerland of Uzbekistan". The landscape is characterized by Alay Mountains and waits with meadows, green forests, mineral springs and lakes, including the 1776 incurred on account of severe earthquakes lake Kok -Kol (also Kullikurban, Kurbankul, " blue lake "). The mountain streams Kok Su and Su Oq unite here to the river Shohimardonsoy.

History

1930, the territory of Kyrgyzstan was annexed Shohimardon off and Uzbekistan and has since been enclosed by Kyrgyzstan. During the Soviet period Shohimardons existence purely administrative relevance had an exclave, today visas are required to cross the border to or from Shohimardon can.

Attractions and sites of local

A mausoleum in Shohimardon is as grave of the son in law of the Prophet Muhammad, the fourth caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib, worshiped. The mausoleum was for centuries the goal of many pilgrims, as well as the Khans of Kokand. 1921, the mausoleum was destroyed, making the pilgrimages ceased within the meaning of Soviet atheism. 1993 Hazrat Ali mausoleum was erected in the center, which corresponds in shape to the Hazrat Ali mosque from the Soviet era. Today, the mausoleum is again target of religious pilgrims. The place name Shohimardon refers to the Caliph Ali.

The Uzbek poet Hamza Hakimzoda Niyoziy, who was killed in 1929 Shohimardon was dedicated to a mausoleum and a museum in the 1960s and built in 1989 on the occasion of his hundredth birthday, a new museum and a monument. For a time, wore Shohimardon Niyoziy honor the name Hamzaobod ( Ҳамзаобод, Russian Хамзаабад Chamsaabad ).

On weekends there is a market on the main road.

In Soviet times, several sanatoria were built in Shohimardon.
