Short U (Cyrillic)

Ў (lowercase ў, also known as a short U) is the twenty-second letter of the Belarusian alphabet, consisting of a У with Breve. His counterpart in the Belarusian Latin alphabet is UU. Phonetically, it displays a consonantal u - comparable to the Polish ł or w in English. Etymologically it is at positions where v and l is in other Slavic languages.

In the Uzbek language, this character was also used until the introduction of the Latin alphabet in the 1990s where it represented the unrounded semi-closed back vowel / ɤ /. In the Latin alphabet, the ў was replaced o (Example: Ўзбекистон → Ozbekiston ). Also in use was ў in the karakalpakischen language, where the labialized voiced velar approximant / w / and is represented in the Lateinschreift replaced by w.
