Shūichi Katō (critic)

Katō Shuichi (Jap.加藤 周一; born September 19, 1919 in Kaneo -machi, Shibuya -machi, Toyotama -gun (now: Shibuya, Shibuya -ku ), Tokyo Prefecture, † December 5, 2008 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese physician cultural and literary scholar, critic and author.

Life

Katō studied medicine at the prestigious University of Tokyo in 1950 and a doctorate to the Dr. med. He conducted research at several international institutes and finally turned to the Japanese culture and literature to. Until 1985 he was a professor of this subject at the Tokyo Sophia University and also a visiting lecturer at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Munich. His writings became popular all over the world.

He holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Bucharest, Venice, Grenoble and since 2001 the FU Berlin.

After 1988 he already stopped visiting professor at Ritsumeikan University, in 1992 he became director of the Museum for World Peace (国際 平和 ミュージアム, Kokusai Heiwa Myūjiamu ) of the University.
