Sigala

Sigala is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kõrgessaare ( Kõrgessaare vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Sigala has thirteen inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). The village is situated thirteen kilometers west of the capital Kärdla.

North of the village is the 13.8 acre lake Allikalaht, east of the ten acre lake Haavasoo järv. West of the village are the two lakes Venelaht (4.1 hectares) and Väike Venelaht (2 hectares).

The village was first mentioned in records in 1565 under the name Siekla. There lived mainly Swedish -born inhabitants of Hiiumaa. Almost all Swedish-speaking families were deported to the Ukraine in 1781 for alleged insubordination on the orders of the Russian Empress Catherine II. Many already died on the journey to the place of exile.
