Sigma Scorpii

σ Scorpii (Sigma Scorpii, σ Sco) is about 600 light years distant star system in the constellation Scorpio.

The main component of the system is a classic representative of the β Cephei variables and belongs to the spectral class B1 to III. Their apparent brightness varies barely perceptible 2.86 to 2.94 mag.

Together with τ Scorpii the star in the historic Arabic astronomy as Alniyat / Al Niyat (Arabic النياط, DMG to - Niyat ) was called.
