Sigmund Schenkling

Berthold Sigismund Schenkling ( born July 11, 1865 in Laucha; † 16 December 1946 in Eisleben ) was a teacher and entomologist and coleopterologist.

Life

Sigmund Schenkling graduated in Lauchagrund the elementary school. As the son of the teacher and Coleopterologen Carl Schenkling (1835-1911), he joined early on in his father's footsteps. After the completion of training in teacher training college Weissenfels 1888, he first worked in Stolberg in the Harz Mountains, then in Hamburg as an elementary school teacher. There his scientific studies directed increasingly to the field of coleopterology ( Coleopterologie ). His work on the checkered beetles ( Cleridae ) brought him to the turn of the century in professional circles world-wide reputation, and the invitation to co-authorship of one of its most important time entomological works, the "Genera Insectorum " by P. Wytsman ( 1866-1925 ). Shortly after his marriage to Paula von Pein, with whom he reared three sons, followed Schenkling 1904 appointment as curator of the German Entomological National Museum (today the German Entomological Institute, DEI ) in Berlin, which by the scholar and entomologists Gustav Kraatz private foundation had been established. As a curator and bibliographer Schenkling contributed significantly to the fact that the DEI in the coming years became the most important German entomological institution of international acclaim.

In 1909, the Dutch publisher and entomologist Wilhelm Junk won him as an editor for the publication of the " Coleopterorum Catalogus", an ambitious project that should summarize the entire previously published beetle literature systematically worked to date. Work on it took 30 years and the Catalogus grew to 31 volumes in the lexicon format; worked on him a total of 57 authors. Even today he is regarded as a standard work of Coleopterologie. During his work in the DEI to 1922 Schenkling recorded together with the Director of DEI and doctor Walther Horn ( 1870-1939 ), the entomological literature to 1863 in the index Litteraturae Entomologicae, which also still has global significance.

After his retirement in 1926 Schenkling began his last great work, the. " Faunal guide to the coleopteran literature " of which only the first volume was published because of the Second World War The not destroyed by the war, most of the manuscripts is now in the archives of the DEI, which also manages the scientific legacy of Schenkling.

In recognition of his life's work, the German Entomological Society Sigmund Schenkling awarded 1943 Johann Christian Fabricius Medal.
