Wilhelm Junk

Wilhelm Junk (prop, Wilhelm Jeitteles, officially approved the name change in 1890; born February 3, 1866 in Prague, † December 3, 1942 in The Hague ) was a Berlin bookseller, publisher, entomologist and naturalist bibliographer works.

Life

Wilhelm Junk was the son of a doctorate chemical pharmacist Jeitteles Joseph and his wife Caroline, nee Sobotka, who came from a Prague industrialist family. After high school, William junk graduated in 1882 with his uncle Julius Friedlander in Berlin as a bookseller and visited during his period of training lectures at the University in zoology, botany and history of science. In 1891 he became a partner in 1899 and made his own company " Publisher and bookseller of Science W. Junk" in Berlin independently. His interest in insects informed Wilhelm Junk with Ernst Jünger and supplied him as its antiquarian rare insect known union works.

Junk married Elli Silbermann (1875-1942), the couple had two children. In 1934 he emigrated with his family and his company in the Netherlands. In 1935, he sold his bookseller, which exists to this day under the name " Antiquariaat Junk " in Amsterdam, but retained his publisher. After Junks violent death in 1942, his son Walter Weisbach took over the publishing house management, which passed after his death in 1962 his widow, Irma Marie - Weisbach junk. Under the name " Dr. W. Junk Publications " existed, the publisher with a focus on the edition of scientific works until the 1980s in The Hague.

Work

As an antiquarian William Junks was interested especially rare natural history works, especially botany and entomology. As a publisher, he published panel works and catalogs to these areas. From 1901 to 1935 appeared in its publisher reprints of rare ancient writings on natural history, including, for example, in 1925 the Hispanic travel Description de anno 1671 of Friederich Martens.

In addition to the publication of contemporary scientific works of Wilhelm Junk dedicated in a special way the bibliographic work. Between 1909 and 1916 his " Bibliographia Botanica " was in two volumes, 1913, the " Bibliographia Lepidopterologica " and 1918 the " Vertebratorum Bibliographia ." Between 1912 and 1935 he developed his " Bibliographia Coleopterologica ." He gave the bibliographical journal " Rara Historico - naturalia et Mathematica " out (1900-1939, published in two volumes with a supplementary volume of " The Historico - Bibliophile " ), and written as a bibliographer four papers on Carl Linnaeus.

Wilhelm Junk was a member of the German Geographical Society and the German Society of Applied Entomology and an honorary member of the Swedish Linnean Society of Upsala. 1922 and 1923 he received an honorary doctorate from each of the universities in Frankfurt ( Dr. rer. Nat. ) And Innsbruck ( Dr. phil. ).
