Silas M. Burroughs (politician)

Silas Mainville Burroughs (* July 16, 1810 in Ovid, Seneca County, New York, † June 3, 1860 in Medina, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1857 and 1860 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Silas Burroughs attended preparatory schools. In 1835 he was hired to manage the community in Medina, Orleans County. In 1836, and again from 1839 to 1843, he served as Village Trustee mayor of this municipality. After studying law and his 1840 was admitted to the bar he began in Medina to work in this profession. From 1845 to 1847 he was mayor there again. At the same time he also served as a legal representative of the place. Burroughs was also a member of the state militia of New York. Between 1848 and 1858 he held there the rank of brigadier general. In the years 1837, 1850, 1851 and 1853, he sat as an MP in the New York State Assembly.

In the 1850s Burroughs joined the Republican Party, founded at that time. In the congressional elections of 1856, he became the 31st electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Thomas T. Flagler on March 4, 1857. After a re-election, he could remain until his death on June 3, 1860 in Congress. This period was marked by the events leading up to the Civil War.
