Silver Bay is a small town ( with a status of "City" ) in Lake County in the northeast of the U.S. State of Minnesota. In 2010, Silver Bay had 1887 inhabitants.

Geography

Silver Bay is located on the north shore of Lake Superior, the westernmost and highest of the Great Lakes. The place is close to the border with Canada and the lake across from Wisconsin and Michigan. Silver Bay is located at 47 ° 17'40 " north latitude, 91 ° 15'27 " west longitude and extending over 21.65 km ², spread over 20.43 km ² land and 1.22 km ² water surface.

Neighboring Cities of Silver Bay are Beaver Bay ( on the southwest city limits ) and Illgen City (7.9 km north-east ).

The nearest large towns are in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada (216 km northeast) and Duluth ( 88.7 km southwest ). Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota, is located 336 km south-west.

The mouth of the Pigeon River, which forms the border with Canada, located 154 km north-east.

Traffic

The main street of Silver Bay is formed by the leading along the north shore of Lake Superior Minnesota State Route 61. All other roads are minor roads, some unpaved roadways and within local connection paths.

In Silver Bay, there is a port over which the city has connection to all cities on the Great Lakes.

With the 14.9 km west south-west to Silver Bay Municipal Airport, the city has a small airfield. History

Silver Bay went from a settlement founded in 1954 out on the northeastern edge of Beaver Bay. There was shipped from the mine company reserve the Corporation funded in the 100 km north-west Babbitt taconite on ships and taken to processing steel, around the Great Lakes.

In the 1960s, it was announced that the Reserve Corporation sunk their tailings into Lake Superior. The company was prevented on the basis of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 a court in the further absorption of harmful substances in Federal waters in 1972.
