Silver sulfadiazine the silver salt of the Sulfadiazins and has an antibacterial effect against a variety of germs. Silver sulfadiazine is locally ( topically ) used mainly in superficial, fresh wounds (eg after second-and third-degree burns, large abrasions ).
Silver sulfadiazine cream is applied during the healing phase, or to a skin graft. It prevents the growth of a broad spectrum of bacteria and yeasts on the injured skin due to its antibacterial effect as a sulfonamide, but also because of the oligodynamic effect of the silver ion. Silver sulfadiazine is poorly soluble in water. Silver binds to proteins from the wound exudate, wherein the sulfadiazine silver sulfadiazine from compound released, and a small rate of absorption ( to 10 %).
Prolonged use may result due to the silver content to form a local argyria.
