Å ipan

Sipan ( Italian Giuppana ) an island in the archipelago is Elaphiten northwest of Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Location and population

Sipan is 9.1 km long and up to 2.6 km wide. On the island of 436 people ( 2001). Sipan is located north of Dubrovnik or south of the Peljesac peninsula and belongs to the Dubrovnik-Neretva county.

The island is crossed by two hill ridges of limestone, between which extends a fertile valley. In the extension of the north-eastern hills the small island of Ruda is upstream. The most important places are Šipan and Sudjuradj in the two largest bays of the island. In the interior of the island there are several smaller villages ( selo Vojnovo, Odak, Sutulija, Fraiga ).

The 9 -kilometer Koločep Channel separates the island from the mainland. From Šipan and Sudjuradj are regular boat connections to Dubrovnik ( about Lopud and Koločep) and Mljet. On the island there are numerous private houses and good restaurants; a larger hotel ( " Hotel Sipan " ) is only available in Šipan.

History

The first known mention Sipans under this name dates from the year 1371st In Šipan are summer residences of families Sorkočević, Stjepović - Skočibuha, Murati inter alia, from the 15th century.

About Šipan is the parish church of St. Stephan ( Sv Stjepan ) with a painting of the Master Pantaleon from the second half of the 15th century. On the Veli Vrh in the north is a small fort from the time when Dalmatia part of the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy. Just east of that is a well-preserved, early Croatian church ( Sveti Petar ) from the 12th century. In the south of the Gothic Rector's Palace can be found from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic (15th century). In the interior of the island ( Šipansko Polje ), in Silovo Selo, the little St. John's Church is decorated with frescoes from the 11th century ( in the 15th century expanded ).

In the village Sudjuradj there are two fortified castles and fortified church ( Sveti Duh ) from 1539 and in Pakljena two for the Benedictine monastery belonging to churches, including the pre-Romanesque St. Michael's Church from the 11th century, as well as next to a Romanesque-Gothic house, with a Gothic tower, built in the Renaissance style Holy Spirit Church from 1569.

Between Sudjuradj and Šipan are the Summer House Ruins in the Dubrovnik nobility and the former bishop's seat. In the southeast, there is also a well-preserved fortified church complex dating from the 15th century.

Tourism

The island is now developed for tourism with a larger hotel (Hotel Sipan ) and 3 restaurants ( More, tavern Kod Marka ) in the port of Šipan and another restaurant in Sudjuradj and numerous private rooms. It is visited by many day-trippers in the summer with the liner Postira of Lopud-Kolocep-Dubrovnik/Gruz and is also a popular starting place for many yachts.
