Sistan and Baluchestan Province

Sistan and Baluchistan (Persian سيستان و بلوچستان ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. Capital is Zahedan. In the province of 2,405,742 people ( 2006 census ). The province covers 181 785 square kilometers and has a population density of 13 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Geography

Sistan and Baluchistan are in the southeast of the country, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as the provinces of South Khorasan, Kerman and Hormozgan. The capital is Zahedan with 567 449 inhabitants ( 2006 census ) is the largest city in the province. In the north of the province is the area of Sistan, whose name is derived from the Scythian people of the Saka ( Sacae ). There was in the Middle Ages the larger historical region Zabulistan. Population

The population consists mostly of Balochi speaking Baloch, whose settlement area extends over the eastern Iran, southern Afghanistan and southwest Pakistan.
