As with Cinderella ( 1950), the Disney Studios chose a fairy tale by Charles Perrault template.

Through the love of the painter Eyvind Earle to the architecture and painting of the Middle Ages, the film stands out artistically. The stylistic elements of the Gothic and Renaissance merge. Because of the stylistic turning point of the painters differed from the previously round and soft forms, which were still clearly recognizable in Snow White, Aurora and let appear sharp and angular.

The film was not only with stereo sound in theaters, but has also been presented as a second Disney film for " Lady and the Tramp " in the widescreen process Technirama 70. The Disney film technicians and special effects expert Ub Iwerks developed its own anamorphic wide-angle lens for capturing images.

If you look closely you can see that some of the characters of the film Sleeping Beauty are models of Shrek characters. For example, from a cloud vortex -winning castle of the sleeping princess, the design of the dragon and the singing contest of the princess and the birds.

The budget was about 7 million U.S. dollars, which must be justified inter alia by the extremely expensive technology. Although the film was a box office earnings of approximately 3 million U.S. dollars one of the most successful films of those times, yet he brought no profit.

According to a statement from Prince Philip in the movie, the action takes place in the 14th century.

Reviews

"The film boasts a cartoon technical virtuosity, but the accumulation of camera movements and effects reveals more artificiality and sterility that were a joke and the heat of earlier masterpieces in stark contrast. Special distinction should be obtained by the adapted music by Tchaikovsky " Sleeping Beauty ," and yet many of the fresh, original songs missing his earlier films, such as the yodel song of the dwarves from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs "

" The last of the great fairy tales Disney should at that time to crown His work, however, was scorned by critics. From today's perspective it should be noted that the studio never been a better implementation of human figures in the cartoon [ ... ] succeeded. Tchaikovsky's music proved itself extremely well, but above all the work of the background painter Eywind Earl is noteworthy that drew inspiration from the Book of Hours of the Duc Duberry. Maleficent, the evil fairy, is one of the darkest Disney characters ever. You and numerous horror scenes make the film seem less appropriate for smaller children. "

The Film Review Board Wiesbaden gave the production value the predicate.
