Sønner av Norge

Sønner av Norge ( German: Sons of Norway ) is a Norwegian song with patriotic content. It won in 1820 a contest of Selskapet for Norges Vel (Society for Norway's welfare ) to a new Norwegian national anthem, which they wanted to cement the independence of Norway in 1814 after the dissolution of the union with Denmark. Until then, the drinking song Norges Skaal was unofficially as the national anthem in use.

By 1864, it was therefore the sole national anthem of Norway before Yes, vi elsker dette lands appeared. Until the early 20th century, however, both forms have been used in parallel, Sønner av Norge especially in formal contexts. Until today Yes, vi elsker dette ends up as a de facto sole anthem established, however, this has never been formally defined.

The text of Sønner av Norge comes from Henrik Bjerregaard anchor, the melody of Christian Blom. The text was written in Riksmål, an older variant of the present Norwegian standard language Bokmål, which is even more similar to the Danish language.

A modern version of this piece appeared in 2003 on the album Evige Asatro the Viking rock band Glittertind.
