The Sochi Airport ( IATA code AER, ICAO code URSS, Russian Международный аэропорт Сочи ) is the airport of the Russian city of Sochi on the Black Sea in the Krasnodar region. It is located in the village of Eagle, the 1961 counts administratively to the city of Sochi area. He's since July 2007, part of the Russian conglomerate Basic Element, which the multi-billionaire Oleg Deripaska is 100 %.

History

On November 23, 1945, decided to build a civilian airport in Adler. Already in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) were launched Soviet combat aircraft from 8 July to September 1, 1941 from the present airport area to defend the Black Sea coast.

In 1956 the airport buildings were (today's old building) and the first start and runway built. As early as next year produced the airport from 35,000 passengers and some 1,000 tons of freight were transported. From 1960 to 1965, a new passenger - baggage terminal and a hotel were built with 200 beds and installed radio and navigation technology and approach lighting. The number of passengers of the airport increased from 902,000 in 1960 to 2.3 million in 1990. Thereafter fell passenger numbers, caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union, by the year of 2009 by 7.9% to 1.485 million passengers annually.

The airport was in 1966 awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. At the time of its existence more than 60 million passengers were handled at the airport.

Due to be held in Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, the airport was expanded to a capacity of 4 million passengers. The end of 2009 the first test flights were handled in the new terminal. In September 2010 it was taken by IATA clearance guidelines in operation, the full commissioning took place in 2012. Covering a total area of 57,000 m², it is one of the largest terminals in Russia. The new terminal has a capacity of 3500 passengers per hour.

As part of the expansion and the main runway 06 /24 was extended over the river Mzymta away at 3500 meters. In addition, an airport station was established.

Accidents

  • On 1 October 1972, a Ilyushin Il -18 of Aeroflot crashed on the way to Moscow Vnukovo shortly after takeoff into the Black Sea. All 100 passengers and 8 crew members died in the crash. As crash cause a failure of the fuel system or engine or a heart attack the pilot is assumed to be either.
  • On 3 May 2006, an Airbus A320 aircraft crashed Flight 967 Armavia from Yerevan from the Black Sea; 113 people lost their lives.
