Society for Psychotherapy Research

The Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR ) is a founded in 1970, international, multidisciplinary and scientific organization dedicated to research on psychotherapy.

Aims and History

The objectives of the Company are:

  • To promote the development of scientific research on psychotherapy;
  • Communication to support the understanding and application of research results;
  • To increase the scientific and social benefits of psychotherapy research;
  • Themselves to supply through research contributions;
  • To improve the effectiveness of psychotherapies.

The company's activities include:

  • Regular conferences for communication of research contents, methods, results and applications
  • The dissemination of research contents, methods, results and applications through print and electronic media.

The company has its origins in a first meeting of psychotherapy researchers in September 1968 in San Francisco, at that time affiliated to the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association ( APA). This meeting was supported by small donations from the APA Division of Psychotherapy and the American Academy of Psychotherapists. The initiative for the establishment of the group came from Kenneth I. Howard and David E. Orlinsky, with the assistance of Lester Luborsky, Nathanael Raskind and Hans H. Strupp. The first official, nor limited to the United States Congress of the SPR was held in Highland Park, Illinois in June 1969.

Since 1970, an international congress is organized once a year. For the continental or regional scientific exchanges provide historically grown "Chapters " ( North America, Latin America, Europe, United Kingdom) and "Area Groups" (Australia, Italy, USA, Mid Atlantic, USA - Ohio). Thematically, so-called " Interests Sections " established (eg, Culture and Psychotherapy ).

Development of membership

Each year an international conference, a report on the state of the SPR is presented by the Executive Officer, which includes the development of the number of members in recent years. The total number of members is world fairly constant at about 1100. Shown to local fluctuations in membership of the Chapters, depending on which country or continent hosting the annual meeting, for the annual membership is at a lower session fee and a free annual subscription of journal " Psychotherapy Research " connected. For example, the 2009 annual meeting in Santiago de Chile took place, so that the Chapter Latin America has seen a membership record in 2009.

Scientific Journal

The company is listed since 1991 editor of the scientific journal " Psychotherapy Research ," the published peer-reviewed articles in peer review and in MEDLINE with Impact Factor (IF 2009 = 1:43 ). For the first editor team included David Shapiro, Hans Strupp and Klaus Grawe.

Conferences

The international annual meetings will be held in late June in the rule. The conference language is English. In the 21st century is also reflected in the dissemination of conference venues throughout the world, the increasing internationalization of the company and the underlying internationalization of psychotherapy research. The first European Conference on Psychotherapy Research took place in 1981 in Trier instead. The European Chapter of the SPR was eventually founded in 1987 at the international SPR meeting in Ulm.
