Soini Nikkinen

Soini Nikkinen ( Mikael Soini Nikkinen; born July 19, 1923 in Kiuruvesi; † 2 June 2012 in Nastola ) was a Finnish javelin thrower, who was successful 1948-1956. The Finnish champion in 1952 and runner-up of the 1951, 1954, 1956 and 1957 threw a world record and won European Championship bronze.

Career

After he had with 79.60 m ( 1954) and 79.64 m ( 1956) already thrown two Finnish records, he succeeded on 26 June 1956 in Kuhmoinen a throw of 83.56 m. The joy that the world record by nearly three years - Record launcher Yrjö Nikkanen was in 1953 replaced by the American Bud hero - was back in Finnish hands, was short-lived, because already six days later he went again to a non- Finns lost when the pole Janusz sídlo Nikkinen exceeded by 10 cm.

Soini Nikkinen participated in two Olympic Games. 1948 in London, he was charged with 58.05 m twelfth (Victory length of his countryman Tapio Rautavaara: 69,77 m). In Helsinki in 1952 was 68.80 m aft (Victory width by the American Cy Young: 73,78 m).

At an international success, he came at the European Athletics Championships in Berne in 1954. There, he won with a throw of 73.38 m bronze medal behind Poland's Janusz sídlo ( gold with 76.35 m) and Vladimir Kuznetsov of the USSR ( silver with 74.61 m).

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, he did not participate.
