Sokolniki, Tula Oblast

Sokolniki (Russian Сокольники ) is a former town in Tula Oblast (Russia). The place had from 1958 to 2008 city status until it was amalgamated into the city Nowomoskowsk. Last Sokolniki had about 10,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Sokolniki is located in the northern part of the Central Russian plate about 80 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Tula.

Until the incorporation by Nowomoskowsk it belonged to Rajon Nowomoskowsk. Sokolniki is located about 13 kilometers in a straight line northeast of the center of Nowomoskowsk. Between Nowomoskowsk and Sokolniki is situated by the former city Severo- Zadonsk, which was incorporated into Donskoi in 2005.

History

In place of an existing since the 19th century the village of the same name was built in connection with the borrowing of coal mining in this part of the Moscow lignite basin around 1950 a workers' settlement, which received its town charter in 1958.

The independent city status lost Sokolniki with the application of any law of the Tula Oblast of 24 October 2008, after which the current city territory completely went to the city Nowomoskowsk.

Economy and infrastructure

After the decline of coal mining and its setting in the 1990s, there are in Sokolniki are no significant industry. Part of the population is in the nearby larger cities, such Nowomoskowsk or Donskoi, busy.

The town is the terminus of a 16 -kilometer-long railway line, which starts from the station Kljutschowka the net to Nowomoskowsk / Uslowaja ( suburban and freight).
