Sokolov District

The Okres Sokolov ( Sokolov District ) is a district in Carlsbad Region in the Czech Republic. It lies on the southern slopes of the Ore Mountains and is a center of lignite mining.

The Okresy are sized roughly comparable to the districts in Germany and was dissolved on 31 December 2002 as authorities.

In Okres Sokolov approximately 93,400 people live in 38 municipalities ( Obec ) with 103 districts ( část obcí ), it has an area of 754 km ².

Economy

Mining and Industry

The area has always stood out by a rich deposits of natural resources. Already in the Middle Ages, people began to build up in the mountains ores, today it is mainly brown coal in Sokolov. Strongly represented is the production of fuels, machinery, chemical industry, textile, glass and ceramic production. The lignite mining reached its peak about the middle of the 1980s. The reserves are largely exhausted, and the promotion since then has steadily declined. Mining and reclamation of the land is in the hands of the mining company " Sokolovská uhelná " based in Sokolov.

Negative effects of industrialization

The strong industrialization also led to high pollution of the environment and nature. In the 80 - years odors up to Upper Franconia were in persistent inversion layer in the winter months noticeable ( there referred to as cat shit smell ).

Due to the decline in coal production and improvement of the filter devices of technical equipment but the situation has now improved considerably.

Reclamation measures

As early as the late '50s liberated area have already been restored. In total, there are nearly 3000 ha, 1100 were approved for agricultural use, 1700 ha were reforested. The reclamation of additional 1800 ha is planned. There are also water and surfaces were created. In the immediate vicinity of Sokolov an 18 -hole golf course was built.

In district 15 thousand companies are reported, the unemployment rate is about 11%. Due to the unfavorable economic development, the investment rate has been declining for years and is about 1.2 billion crowns.

Agriculture, Nature Parks and Tourism

Hardly a role in this harsh climate mountainous region filled with forests, which occupy about half the area, agriculture plays.

In the south of the district, the Natural Park is Slavkov (former military area ) and north of the Ore Mountains, and 15 protected areas and two national nature reserves.

Tourism also plays only a subordinate role in the district. Recreational areas are found in the areas of Kraslice, Bublava and Stříbrná ( winter sports areas ).

Popular with tourists, the town of Loket ( Elbogen ) picturesquely situated and, increasingly, the community Chlum Svaté Maří ( Maria Kulm ), the Sanctuary is being rediscovered by German pilgrims.
