Sokoto State

Sokoto is a federal republic of Nigeria, with its capital Sokoto, the ( 2005), with 563 899 inhabitants and largest city.

Geography

The state is in the northwest of the country, bordered to the north by the Republic of Niger, on the southwest by the Kebbi State and to the southeast by the Zamfara State.

Population

The Sokoto State had, according to the census in 1991 4.392.391 inhabitants, in 2005 there were only 4,244,399. With an average of 163 inhabitants per square kilometer.

History

Management

The state is divided into 23 Local Government Areas. These are: Binji, Bodinga, Dange - Shuni, Gada, Goronyo, Gudu, Gwadabawa, Illela, Isa, kebbe, Kware, Rabah, Sabon - Birni, Shagari, Silame, Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Tambuwal, Tangaza, Tureta, Wamako, Wurno and Yabo.

Economy

Agriculture is the main industry. Work 90 percent of the working population of the state in it. There are millet, maize, rice, beans, wheat, cassava, potatoes, peanuts, cotton, sugarcane and tobacco grown and a number of fruit and vegetables harvested. These include: oranges, mangoes, bananas, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, papaya, guava and the medicinal herb marshmallow.

Livestock in the state is estimated at around 15 million animals. These include camels, sheep and goats. Oyo is also a major supplier of leather for the world market.
