Sokratis Papastathopoulos [ sokratis papastaθopulos ] (Greek Σωκράτης Παπασταθόπουλος, born June 9, 1988 in Kalamata ), known as Sokratis is a Greek football player who is under contract with German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
Career
Association
Papastathopoulos began his career at Apollon Petalidiou, from where he moved to AEK Athens in 2005. In 2008, he became the youngest captain in the club's history. Previously, he was loaned out to Niki Volou from the second division to play matches.
From the 2008/ 09 season, the central defender Sokratis played in the Italian first division club Genoa CFC, in which he made it into the starting eleven.
On 20 July 2010 Sokratis was bought by AC Milan. The Genoa got in return the players Nnamdi Oduamadi, Rodney Strasser and Gianmarco Zigoni in the form of so-called " comproprietà " ( co-ownership ).
For the 2011/12 season Papastathopoulos initially returned to Genoa until he first decide on loan to SV Werder Bremen in July 2011. He added Werder will wear the number 22 Due to the length and the difficult pronunciation of his surname is his first name on the jersey. His first competitive match for Werder he played 30 July 2011 at 1:2 against 1.FC Heidenheim in the DFB Cup. A week later he came to the first Bundesliga Matchday, as Bremen won against 1 FC Kaiserslautern 2-0. Beginning of September 2011 was the SV Werder registered with the DFL on the name of the player names shortened as " artist name", so he has since as Sokratis aufläuft.Zur 2012/13 season was Sokratis firmly committed.
As early as the 2013/14 season changed Sokratis within the league to Borussia Dortmund. He signed a contract until 30 June 2018. His first goal in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund, he scored on the 11th match day 6-1 victory against VfB Stuttgart for temporarily 1:1.
National
Papastathopoulos was the captain of the Greek U-19 national team, with whom he U- 19 Championship 2007 in Austria and Switzerland, European vice- champion in, but missed due to suspension the final against Spain. Because of their achievements, he was elected and two other teammates ( Sotirios Ninis and Konstantinos Mitroglou ) at the U-19 European Championship among the eleven best players of the tournament. He also played for the U -21 team in Greece.
In the national team he debuted in early 2008 in a friendly match against the Czech Republic, but was not appointed in the same year in the squad for the 2008 European Football Championship, although he belonged to the extensive extended squad of 24 players. After the tournament Papastathopoulos was called back on a regular basis by the German coach Otto Rehhagel in the squad for the national team. With the Football World Cup 2010 in South Africa he was in the squad and came up with two inserts. In the match against Argentina he showed a highly acclaimed performance by Lionel Messi he switched off effectively.
