Sölk Pass

Pass on Sölkpass

K

The Sölkpass is a mountain pass through the Lower Tauern in Styria ( Austria ). It lies on the boundary between Wölzer and Schladming Tauern and connects via a panoramic road, also Archduke Johann street called the Mur valley with the Enns Valley. Nearby places in the Mur Valley are Schoder, Malmesbury and Oberwölz, in the Enns Valley Groebming.

The height of the Sölkpasses is 1788 m above sea level. A. The pass itself offers little hope, however, there is on the pass road itself a number of interesting prospects. The modern road was extensively expanded two lanes and paved in 1954. Due to their minor significance and lack of avalanche it is not cleared in winter and remains dependent on the weather closed from about November to May.

Adjacent transitions are of the Radstadt Tauern Pass and the Tauern tunnel in the west and the Triebener Tauern Pass in the east.

As a mountain pass leads the country road L704, the Sölkpaß road or Archduke Johann street called about it.

History

In the late Middle Ages the Sölkpass, which was sometimes referred to as Sölkscharte began to gain a degree of regional importance. From this time, at least one commission is also saved in a document. Already in 1593 was the first project for the construction of a cart path on the Sölkpass, for a cost estimate provided for a sum of 1460 florins.

Just east of the Sölkpasses is the 1987 m high Glattjoch to which today carries only a hiking trail. In the 16th century there was a locally important mule, in 1574 began to expand this. This expansion, which lasted all of one hundred years, had to be adjusted without result, in consequence lost Glattjoch soon any local importance.

From the top bend on the north side you can still see an old mule track, which was once celebrated frequently in the Middle Ages.
