Soltsy

Solzy (Russian Сольцы ) is a town in the Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 10,086 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 80 kilometers southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Veliky Novgorod on the left bank of the opening into the Ilmensee Schelon.

Solzy is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1904 Saint Petersburg- Dno - Nowosokolniki - Vitebsk ( kilometer 206).

History

Solzy was first mentioned in 1390, as here, a peace between the Republic of Novgorod and Pskov Republic was closed. The place name is derived from the Russian word for salt sol; the residents were concerned with the salt-works of local salty springs.

1471 Battle of the Schelon took place in the vicinity in which troops of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Republic of Novgorod beat crushing and so the final demise ushered in Novgorod.

In the 18th century the place was known as a center of the linen trade.

In 1914 a city charter was granted.

During World War II Solzy was occupied on 13 July 1941 by the German Wehrmacht, finally recaptured from 16 to 22 July 1941 by the Red Army in the short term and on 21 February 1944 by troops of the Leningrad Front in the Leningrad - Novgorod operation.

Culture and sights

In Solzy the Intercession Intercession Church ( Покровская церковь / Pokrowskaja Tserkov ) from the second half of the 18th century and the Elias Cathedral ( Ильинский собор / Ilyinski Sobor ) from the 18th to 19th centuries.

Ten kilometers from the city, the village is Wybiti with castle and park. In the village Molotschkowo the Assumption Church of the Apostle John's Church stands ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Tserkov ) from the 19th century, in the village Welebizy ( церковь Иоанна Богослова / Tserkov Ioanna Bogoslowa ) from the second half of the 19th century.

Economy

In Solzy there is a work for magnetic tapes as well as companies in the textile and food industries.

Just north of town is the same base of the Russian Air Force, among other things, on the heavy bombers of the types Tupolev Tu -22M and Tupolev Tu- 95 are stationed.
