Somdev Devvarman

Somdev Devvarman Kishore (also Somdev Dev Varman, born 13 February 1985 in Guwahati, Assam ) is an Indian tennis player who is active in the ATP World Tour since 2009. His biggest successes have so far to reach the final of the ATP tournament in Chennai and winning the gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in singles.

Career

Devvarman grew up near Chennai, before the University of Virginia visited in 2005.

2002 Devvarman first played a smaller Futures tournament in Lucknow, however, where he retired in the first round. His first victory on the Futures Tour, he was able to record at the tournament in November 2002 in his home country. There were other tournaments where Devvarman often eliminated in the first round. In March 2004, he won his first Futures tournament at the age of 19 years in Calcutta. At this time he was ranked 967 in the world tennis rankings.

On July 31, 2006 Devvarman played a tournament for the first time as part of the ATP Tour. In Washington, he retired in the first round against the Argentine Edgardo Massa with 4:6 and 0:6. In January 2008, the Indians won another Futures tournament in the United States in June of the same year was followed by two more tournament wins, in July Devvarman won his first Challenger tournament. In this tournament, he beat in Lexington -known players like Bobby Reynolds, Xavier Malisse and Robert Kendrick. In August 2008, the young Devvarman could reach a quarter final at an ATP tournament for the first time. In Washington, he hit Taylor Dent and Robert Kendrick, then defeated Igor However Kunizyn.

The tournament in Chennai in January 2009 is still one of the biggest successes of Devvarmans. After he had defeated Kevin Kim, Carlos Moya and Ivo Karlović, he moved without a fight against Rainer Schuettler due to an injury of the German into the final of the ATP tournament for one. Here, however, he lost to Marin Cilic in straight sets.

Devvarman won his next ATP successes, the NCAA Championships in the United States in 2007 and 2008.

In 2010, Devvarman succeeded at the Commonwealth Games 2010 in India to defeat the Australian Greg Jones in the final and thus to win the first gold medal in men's singles in the history of the Games.

In February 2011, Devvarman reached in Johannesburg for the second time in his career, an ATP final. There he won against Kevin Anderson Although the first set, but ultimately lost in three sets.
